Are online ADHD assessments a valid option in 2026?
Online ADHD assessments have become the most common route to diagnosis in the UK. What started as a pandemic-era workaround has become a permanent and clinically well-established option — and for most adults, it is now the preferred choice. All assessments listed on this page are conducted by CQC-registered providers, which means the clinicians are regulated to the same standards as those working in NHS settings.
The assessment itself works identically to an in-person appointment. You join a video call with a qualified psychiatrist or specialist ADHD nurse who conducts a structured clinical interview — typically the DIVA-5 or a similar validated tool — covering your current symptoms, childhood history, and the impact on your daily life. The session usually lasts between 60 and 90 minutes. Beforehand, you will complete standardised questionnaires and, in many cases, a third-party account from someone who knows you well.
Online assessments are consistently cheaper than in-person equivalents. Because providers do not need to maintain physical clinic space for every patient, savings are passed on — and the competitive online market has driven prices down further. One common concern is GP acceptance. In practice, GPs routinely accept diagnoses from CQC-registered online providers and will discuss shared care prescribing arrangements following an online diagnosis — just as they would after an in-person private assessment. Several online providers also participate in the NHS Right to Choose scheme, meaning eligible patients in England can access an online assessment completely free of charge. Your GP refers you, the NHS pays the clinic, and you attend your appointment by video call. How do online ADHD assessments work?
After booking, you will complete pre-assessment questionnaires about your symptoms, history, and daily functioning. Some clinics also ask a parent, partner, or colleague to provide a third-party account. On the day of your assessment, you join a video call with a qualified clinician — typically a psychiatrist or specialist ADHD nurse — who conducts a structured clinical interview lasting 60–90 minutes. At the end of the process (usually within a few days), you receive a written diagnostic report and, if appropriate, medication recommendations.
Can I get medication from an online ADHD assessment?
Yes — if you are diagnosed with ADHD following an online assessment, the prescribing clinician can initiate medication in the same way as an in-person provider. Most clinics offer an initial private prescription, after which your GP may agree to take over prescribing under an NHS 'shared care' agreement. This means you pay standard NHS prescription charges (currently £9.90 per item) rather than private prescription costs of £30–£100 per month. It is worth confirming your GP's shared care policy before booking.
